Marketing - Why Social Media Management Demand Is So High
SMM or Social Media Managers have been in high demand since Facebook was created; heck even since MySpace was created! In the last six months, the demand for social media managers (specialists) has risen as high as global unemployment.
WHY IS THE DEMAND FOR SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGEMENT SO HIGH?
This may seem like an obvious topic, but to begin, let's go back to caveman times.
1. People need to drink water and eat.
Traditional jobs were dwindling already. The pandemic twisted the knife. People are still going to need a way to earn money and survive. It will never get easier to start your own brand, coaching or consulting business as time continues on. It’s true, it isn’t as easy to start an online business now as a year ago. Everyone gives away so much content before you’ve even paid, so you have to catch up. This means you’ll need to start sooner than later since the established folks have no intention of slowing down. There’s a cliche light at the end of the tunnel. Work smart first, then hard second, and cruise third. Set goals that both challenge and motivate you, and get good at holding yourself accountable, even for the small stuff.
2. The modern definition of community.
Community was human relationships restricted to geological proximity. The modern version of community is device first, geography second. This is normal for all types of relationship building. Connected is another way to say community. We create content and publish it for people in or you’d like to have in your community to get value from. Events get posted and publicized thru social. People who are invited may end up making a new friend on SM even if they don’t go to the event. Now you have people within your community actually engaging each other.
3. It’s nearly impossible to conduct business without being “social”.
We like to do business with people we know, like and trust. What a better way to get to know someone than by seeing all the content they’ve pushed over the years, then reaching out and saying hello. How easy is it to create an event, and click one button to tell the entire group about a new offer. How is anyone going to know what you do if you don’t tell them about it? Why is anyone going to engage if you don't give them a reason too?
Question: you ever seen a 20-year-old flip thru their Instagram or Tiktok?
The point: you basically have about half a second to convince someone to look at your content.
4. The common perception - everybody loves a bargain when the bargain is free.
Think about it, what does Instagram or Facebook charge you to set up an account? What do you have to buy outside of the smartphone you probably already own and use similarly to your brain (.5% of its ability right?) Outside of tapping the screen, it costs nothing. If you’re clever, you’re probably thinking, well it costs me time to actually create the content, write the captions, choose the right hashtags, engage with those who engage with me, and most importantly, as soon as I watch one video or look at one picture, an hour or two has gone by and I still haven’t posted my content for the day.
Time is our greatest asset. Social media companies are technology companies that are all competing with each other for our time.
5. Mastering (anything) social media takes work and discipline, even for people who truly enjoy it.
Since most don’t enjoy managing social media to begin with, or have business that requires complete attention, or a growing family you don’t want to miss out on (posting photos of silly kids and pets is easier than business), the demand for SMM has risen since it's a crucial part of success for about every business or service. A growing percentage of businesses only use TikTok or Facebook for all outbound sales efforts.
If you take anything away from this blurb about social media management, take this. Instill cadence. To actually create an audience, the server of whatever platform you are posting on heavily rewards cadence. It's the hardest for me. Engagement takes consistency. Social media is a user's version of reality. If your content is constantly seen by people, you are part of their social reality.
I hope you've gained value out of this article and it helps you either manage your own social media with a better mindset. Make a great decision about the person or company you do hire to manage such a crucial aspect of modern business.
I almost forgot.
